We care for over 42,000 animals annually, relying on the generosity of animal lovers like you to fund 91% of our life-changing services.

Our Mission: Together We Change Lives, And That Includes Yours.

About the Role

As a Pet At Rest Assistant, you’ll play a meaningful role supporting pet owners during a very personal and emotional time. Working within our compassionate pet cremation service, you’ll help ensure every pet is treated with dignity, care and respect from arrival through to return.

You’ll be involved across the full aftercare process from engaging with grieving customers and providing guidance, to managing orders, documentation and day-to-day operations that ensure a seamless experience for families and veterinary partners.

This is a hands-on, fast-paced role that requires focus, care and emotional maturity. While the work can be demanding at times, it offers a strong sense of purpose and is deeply rewarding for someone who values meaningful, service-driven work.

This position is a 6-month fixed-term contract, part-time (approximately 30 hours per week).

Operating hours are:

  • Monday to Friday: 7:30am – 7:00pm.
  • Saturday: 8:00am – 4:30pm.
  • The service also operates on some public holidays.

Flexibility across these days and hours is essential as weekend work is required.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a compassionate, resilient and reliable person who understands the responsibility of working in an emotionally sensitive environment. You’ll bring a strong service mindset, remain calm and level-headed under pressure, and take pride in supporting both customers and your team during challenging moments. You’re adaptable, detail-focused and comfortable working at pace, while maintaining professionalism, accuracy and care in everything you do. Most importantly, you’re someone who shows up consistently, works well with others, and genuinely values the importance of this work.

What You’ll Do

You’ll be involved in nearly every step of the pet aftercare journey, including:

  • Supporting pet owners compassionately, in person, over the phone and via email, during emotionally sensitive situations.
  • Providing guidance throughout the aftercare and cremation process with empathy and professionalism.
  • Safely transporting pets between customers’ homes, veterinary clinics and the RSPCA site with care and respect.
  • Assisting with the cremation process in line with safety protocols, ensuring precise handling and preparation of remains.
  • Managing orders from start to finish, ensuring accuracy, care and timeliness.
  • Processing paperwork, invoices and records with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and respectful working environment.
  • Working closely with your team to manage daily workflows and changing priorities.

Please note: This role sits at the heart of our end-of-life pet care service. While it is meaningful and rewarding work, it also involves regular exposure to grief, emotionally challenging situations and physically hands-on work. If you’re seeking work that is primarily routine, desk-based or removed from emotionally and physically demanding situations, this role may not be the right fit.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

  • Experience working in a crematorium, funeral, aftercare or similarly sensitive service environment (highly regarded).
  • Compassionate, emotionally mature and professional.
  • Calm, level-headed and resilient under pressure.
  • Strong communicator with a respectful, empathetic approach.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail.
  • Comfortable with administrative tasks and record-keeping.
  • Safety-focused and able to follow procedures and protocols.
  • Team-oriented, adaptable and reliable.
  • Punctual, dependable and takes pride in consistency.
  • Current driver’s licence and confidence working across operational environments.
  • Ability to undertake physical duties including manual handling.
